Obituary of Melvin Waring, Jr.
Melvin Waring, Jr, lovingly known as Uncle Bobby, was born on August 25th, 1934 in Hollywood, South Carolina to Thelma Judge-Hill and Melvin Waring. He was raised by his grandmother, Emily Judge-Simmons, affectionally called “Big Mama”, surrounded by siblings and cousins. At a young age, he was known for his baking skills and quick wit that was met with creative intervention by Big Mama. That wit lasted life long. He obtained his High School Credential and joined the armed forces, serving in the Air Force and Army from 1951 to 1972. He served during the Korean Way, two tours of duty in Vietnam, and was in Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After receiving an honorable discharge, he worked for the Post Office, and later Department of Corrections.
He was very much a family man, even though his hairstyling and glasses picking skills could stand some improvement. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, fast cars and giving his daughter motorcycle rides. He was a smooth dresser. During his retirement he was able to travel with family, volunteer at local schools and the hospital, and win numerous card games. He found meaning in providing counsel to others, family and friends, and daily prayer.
He passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 in Moorestown, New Jersey. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, confidant, very good card player and uncle to many. He is survived by Wife, Kathy Waring, daughters Xenia DeVito and Gabrielle Waring, brother H. Lee Wearing, and many other family members and friends.
