Robert V. Scara Obituary

Robert Victor “Bob” Scara, 90, of Burlington, New Jersey, passed away on February 24, 2026, after a battle with advanced prostate cancer.

Born on February 26, 1935, in Staten Island, New York, he was the son of Louis and Carolyn Scara. He grew up in a working-class, Catholic household as the oldest of four children, with siblings Harry (predeceased), Judy, and Joan. From a young age, Bob demonstrated responsibility and dedication, beginning to play the organ as a child and performing for Catholic Masses on Staten Island by age 13.

Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1978, rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 in the Criminal Investigation Division. His assignments took him to Germany, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, and various U.S. posts. His military career was central to his identity, and he earned numerous commendations for his service to include the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palms. Wherever he was stationed, he continued to share his musical talent as an organist.

After retiring from the Army, Bob served the community as a Detective and then Captain with the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, eventually directing the County’s first Police Academy until his retirement in 2010. From 1985 to 2005, he was the Organist, Cantor, and Choir Director at St. Paul’s Parish in Burlington, New Jersey. Music remained a defining passion; over the course of his life, he played thousands of Masses around the world, well into his 80s. He was also a member of the Masons and Knights of Columbus.

Bob married Edith Brockmann Scara in 1962, who survives him. He is also survived by their children Stephanie Scara, Cathy McKillion (Patrick McKillion), Gerald Scara (Linda Scara), and Leslie Scara, along with nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Bob expressed his love through steadfast provision, protection, and service. He was remembered by coworkers, parishioners, and community members as helpful, kind, and generous.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 20th at 9:30 a.m., followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass at Corpus Christi Church,  11 South Sunset Road, Willingboro, New Jersey, officiated by Monsignor James Dubell. Bob will be cremated, with a private burial to occur at a future date.
